Ancient Greek Level Β – 2023 – 2024

Ancient Greek Level Β - 2023 - 2024

Take your journey into the world of Ancient Greece to the next level with “Ancient Greek Level B” course. Designed for adults who have a foundational knowledge of the language or have successfully completed Elliniki Agogi’s “Ancient Greek Level A”, this program offers a deeper exploration of Ancient Greek language and culture. Led by the accomplished philologist Eumorphia Kapolou, this course promises to elevate your proficiency and appreciation of this timeless language. Just like Level A, proficiency in modern Greek is required to continue in this course.

Advanced Language Skills:

Building on the basics, this intermediate course delves into more complex grammar structures, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions. You will refine your language skills to engage with more challenging texts.

Literary Exploration:

Unlock the treasures of Ancient Greek literature. Analyze and translate excerpts from renowned masterpieces such as “Daphnis and Chloe” which was written in the Roman Empire and remains the only known work of the second-century AD Greek novelist and romance writer Longus. This year students are introduced to the Attic dialect, the most popular of the ancient Greek dialects. The Attic dialect, primarily spoken in the region around Athens during antiquity, is considered one of the most influential and widely recognized of the ancient Greek dialects. Renowned for its clarity, elegance, and literary significance, Attic Greek became the standard dialect for Greek literature and drama. Notable works such as the plays of Sophocles, Euripides, and the philosophical writings of Plato were composed in this dialect, contributing to its enduring prestige in the classical world. Etymology and the basic knowledge you have already mastered in A year will help you understand the text more easily. Simple speech and grammar exercises contribute to further understanding of the text.

Conversational Mastery:

Spoken Greek occupies a large part of the course. Conversing in Ancient Greek further enhances knowledge of the language and provides the framework for translating in Modern Greek with greater ease.

Flexibility in Learning:

Just like Level A, Level B offers the flexibility to attend in person, participate in live online sessions, or access recorded lessons on-demand, ensuring a learning experience tailored to your preferences. No assignments are required, however repetition and personal engagement contribute to faster progress.

Assessment

At the end of each educational year you have the opportunity to evaluate your knowledge with the exams of LanguageCert,  the company that offers the unique international certification of Classical Greek at levels A1, A2, B1 and B2. “Elliniki Agogi” is an official examination center of LanguageCert.
