The two-day seminar Hellenizontes Didaskomen took place in Athens and Thessaloniki from 4 to 7 September 2025 with remarkable success, bringing together teachers from across Greece, both primary and secondary, from public and private schools alike. Participation was free of charge for all interested educators, since the aim of Elliniki Agogi is to promote and support the teaching of Ancient Greek in a modern, creative, and pedagogically effective way.
In the first part of the seminar, the historical background of the method was presented, with references to the roots of the communicative and experiential approach to Ancient Greek both in the Renaissance and in modern educational research.
The continuity and contemporary relevance of this pedagogical line were highlighted, emphasizing active use of the language and aiming at an immersive experience for students. The method was then presented in its updated form, adapted to the needs of today’s school environment. The associates of Elliniki Agogi demonstrated in practice how an Ancient Greek lesson can be organized and implemented through dialogues, theatrical performances, music, historical narratives, creative activities, and classroom games that activate student participation.
Particularly significant was the contribution of foreign professors and researchers, who presented examples of the method’s application in other European educational systems. Their interventions underscored the international dimension of teaching Ancient Greek as a living language and reinforced the sense that Greece stands at the center of a wider pedagogical discussion.
Seminar Evaluation
The participants’ evaluation confirmed the seminar’s high quality:
- The overall experience was described almost universally as “Excellent.”
- The average rating of the experience reached 4.62/5.
- The usefulness of the proposed material was rated at 4.54/5.
- Most teachers stated that they could easily apply the method in their own classrooms.
- Nearly all agreed that their students would enjoy the lesson more if it were taught in the experiential way demonstrated.
Among the positive elements highlighted were the quality of the instructors, the international dimension of the seminar, the engagement with Elliniki Agogi, and the creativity of the activities. The few difficulties mentioned concerned mainly practicalaspects of organization rather than the substance of the seminar.
